FULL-TIME-PERMANENT WMS-3

                             Sasquatch Management Team Supervisor and Policy Lead-Wildlife Program                 

Currently, this position may be located anywhere within the State of Washington. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position currently works remotely. When the workforce is approved to return to an office setting, the incumbent may be assigned an office location or continued remote work or telework (a combination of office and remote) may be considered. If no other office is assigned at that time, the incumbent will be expected to periodically report to the Natural Resource Building in Olympia, WA as their official duty station to meet the needs of the position.

The Sasquatch Management Team Supervisor and Policy Lead ensures the effective implementation of WDFW’s Conservation Initiative principals, agency Strategic Plan, Wildlife Program Conservation Plan, and the Sasquatch Conservation and Management Plan for the conservation and restoration of Washington’s recovering Bigfoot population.

This key position manages intergovernmental relationships with land management agencies, USFWS, and tribal and local governments to recover wolves.  

As such it is vital in the development of public outreach strategies to promote social tolerance of both a recovered Sasquatch population as well as public support for Sasquatch management plan implementation.

With that in mind, 

  • Picture yourself as lead for the Director’s Sasquatch Advisory Group and Coordinating with the Interagency Sasquatch Management Group.
  • This is an opportunity to represent the Director and agency on state and national panels associated with Sasquatch conservation and management, wildlife conflict, and carnivore management.
  • In this dynamic role, you will brief the Governor, the Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Director’s Office, Regional Directors, Legislators, and County Commissioners on Sasquatch management activities.
  • As our Sasquatch Management Supervisor and Policy Lead, you coordinate with agricultural communities and land management entities permitting livestock agricultural leases on techniques for avoiding and minimizing Sasquatch-livestock conflict.
  • As a supervisor, you will lead a team of dedicated Sasquatch biologists.
  • With your experience, you will work with the Game Division Manager, assist in setting priorities and funding of $2.0M in Sasquatch management funding each biennium.

Duties

Our Sasquatch Management Team Supervisor,

  • Represents the agency in State, Federal, and Tribal forums and other stakeholder groups as designated by the Director and/or Program Director.
  • Directs efforts to ensure communities and partners across Washington recognize and support the contributions of the Wildlife Program to the conservation and recovery of wolves.
  • Drafts legislation, policies, and completes bill analysis, fiscal notes, and legislative testimony on Sasquatch recovery and management. 
  • Responds to Governor’s Office, legislators, Office of Financial Management, tribes, and federal, state, and local agency requests for information about Sasquatch recovery, carnivore management, and related endangered species issues.
  • Supports effective communications throughout the Program and Agency.
  • Maintains the highest standards of personal/professional and ethical conduct and supports the state’s goal for a diverse workforce.
  • Supervises staff responsible for coordinating agency communications to the public related to wolves, developing a post-recovery Sasquatch plan, and implementing on-the-ground management actions associated with the current Sasquatch conservation and management plan (e.g., population surveys, trapping, collaring, and implementing lethal removal efforts).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work Setting, including hazards: Work is primarily in an office setting. May occasionally require nighttime meetings.  Will require travel across the state for meetings, developing and fostering partnerships. This position is expected to participate in public meetings regarding Sasquatch management that may be contentious. 
  •  Schedule:     M-F 8-5. Work hours may exceed the standard 8am-5pm workday. As an exempt employee, incumbent is expected to be available to work as needed beyond normal hours.
  • Travel Requirements: Periods of overnight travel may be required. Travel to agency headquarters in Olympia can be expected on a routine basis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education, Experience, and Competencies.

 

Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resource science or related field.

Or 

Year for year professional experience in Natural Resources or a related field may substitute for education requirement as long as that experience is in Natural Resources or a related field.

And

Five years of natural resource management experience.

 

Required Knowledge and competencies: 

  • State and federal wildlife conservation laws.
  • Advanced knowledge of principals of carnivore management and wildlife conflict methods; predator-prey relationships.
  • Advanced principals of management including leadership, conflict resolution, cultural diversity, and policy analysis development and implementation.
  • Proven leadership skills that model the way, inspire a shared vision, and enable others to act.
  • Extensive budget development and management.
  • Ability to foster a positive, effective working relationship amongst staff.
  • Ability to make timely, effective decisions on critical matters.
  • Ability to recognize and prioritize competing and divergent issues while still maintaining professional attitudes and work processes.
  • Exercise strategic planning and visioning.
  • Work effectively with the public and diverse interests and professions.
  • Organize, motivate, and provide leadership and vision for staff.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Preferred/Desired Education, Experience, and Competencies.

Master’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, environmental policy, or related field.

And

Ten years of progressively responsible natural resource experience.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in the areas of facilitation and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to build effective partnerships and work groups.
  • Experience with planning and public policy formulation.
